The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on Monday reopened its headquarters in the village of Gir Ozer in Shingal (Sinjar) district after 12 years of closure, becoming the first Kurdish political party to re-establish a headquarters in the area.
The reopening ceremony was attended by a large number of community representatives, local dignitaries, tribal leaders and a PUK delegation.
During the event, the PUK delegation congratulated the residents of Gir Ozer on the reopening, describing it as an important milestone for the party. The delegation expressed hope that the headquarters would help strengthen engagement with the local community and contribute to serving the people of the area and neighbouring communities.
The delegation said the reopening reflects the PUK's commitment to strengthening communication with local residents and addressing their needs.
Gir Ozer village is located in Shingal district in Iraq's Nineveh Governorate, south of Mount Sinjar. It is one of the region's prominent Yazidi villages. Before the ISIS attack on Shingal in August 2014, the village had a population of around 18,000. The attack triggered the mass displacement of its residents, significantly altering the area's demographic composition through displacement and migration.
