Sulaymaniyah Asayish Directorate has seized 685 authentic silver coins dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries and arrested three suspects accused of attempting to sell the artefacts illegally. The coins were formally handed over to the Sulaymaniyah Museum by the Kurdistan Region Security Agency (Asayish).
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the agency's spokesperson, Colonel Karzan Sherko, said the operation was carried out by the Sulaymaniyah Asayish Directorate, resulting in the recovery of the historic coins and the arrest of three individuals while they were attempting to sell them.
Hashim Hama Abdullah, Director of the Sulaymaniyah Museum, welcomed the handover, describing it as the second such transfer of historic coins to the museum.
"We are pleased that, for the second time, another collection of historic coins has been entrusted to the museum. It is a source of pride for us, and they will be officially received and preserved in the museum's treasury," he said.
Asked about the monetary value of the coins, Abdullah said their historical significance far outweighed any financial worth.
In mid-February, the Sulaymaniyah Asaysih Directorate also handed over 272 historic coins dating back to the 18th century to the Sulaymaniyah Museum.
