A case of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) has been confirmed in Duhok, the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.
The patient is a 23-year-old man from Bazi village in the Soran Independent Administration who contracted the virus after coming into contact with infected livestock.
The patient visited a hospital in Duhok after developing symptoms suspected to be associated with haemorrhagic fever. Medical teams immediately carried out diagnostic procedures and confirmatory tests and began treatment.
He remains in hospital under medical supervision and is receiving treatment, with his condition reported to be stable.
The Ministry of Health urged citizens to follow its health and safety guidelines, particularly those involved in livestock farming or who come into contact with animals and animal products.
It advised residents to immediately notify veterinary teams if they notice signs of illness in animals. Anyone who has contact with livestock or animal products and develops symptoms should also seek medical attention at a hospital without delay.
The ministry said numerous suspected cases of haemorrhagic fever had been recorded across the Kurdistan Region since the beginning of the year, with patients undergoing medical examinations, follow-up and testing.
However, only three cases have so far been officially diagnosed and confirmed within the Kurdistan Region, according to the ministry. Two additional patients from areas outside the region have also been admitted to hospitals in the Kurdistan Region for treatment.
The Ministry of Health reiterated its call for caution and compliance with health guidance to help prevent the spread of the disease.
