The Sulaymaniyah Health Directorate announced on Friday that the Neurology Centre at Shar Teaching Hospital has been recognised internationally after becoming the first government medical centre in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region to receive accreditation as an “Essential Stroke Centre”.
In a statement received by PUKMEDIA, the Directorate said the centre had received international accreditation from the World Stroke Organization (WSO), confirming that it meets global quality and healthcare standards.
The Directorate said the accreditation followed several visits by WSO experts to Sulaimaniyah, during which they conducted comprehensive field assessments of the Stroke Centre’s departments and facilities at Shar Teaching Hospital.
According to the statement, the experts praised the quality of medical examinations, the centre’s compliance with international healthcare standards and the level of services provided to patients.
The Directorate said the accreditation is valid from 21 August 2026 to 20 August 2029, adding that the achievement would contribute to improving healthcare services in Sulaimaniyah and further strengthen Shar Teaching Hospital’s position as a trusted medical centre in the region.
