The 1st International Cancer Conference has been announced in Sulaymaniyah, with more than 200 experts, doctors, researchers, healthcare leaders and international specialists expected to participate.
Dr Yad Naqshbandi, Director of Hiwa Hospital, announced the conference on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, during a press conference. He said the event will be held in Sulaymaniyah on 4 and 5 February 2027, focusing on cancer prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and research, while strengthening the city’s role as an emerging centre for medical development and international cooperation in cancer care.
“The conference will be held under the supervision of the Sulaymaniyah Health Directorate and the Cancer Fund, in coordination with the University of Sulaymaniyah and the Elite Organisation,” Naqshbandi said, adding that the event aims to raise public awareness and improve cancer treatment and patient care.
He said the conference would bring together cancer centres from across the Kurdistan Region and Iraq and feature a number of scientific workshops. Efforts would also be made to introduce artificial intelligence services for cancer patients and incorporate the technology into their treatment and care.
Naqshbandi said more than 200 experts, doctors, researchers, healthcare leaders and international specialists would take part in the conference, stressing that its primary objective was to improve public awareness and patient care.
“We have worked earnestly to expand our services, and holding this conference will mark a new revolution in patient treatment as we take further and newer steps forward,” he said.
He added that each scientific initiative was ultimately aimed at improving services for patients and maintaining Hiwa Hospital’s leading position in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Naqshbandi also announced that, following a recommendation by Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, a branch of Hiwa Hospital would be established as a cancer centre within the administrative boundaries of Raparin.
