The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said US forces have helped nearly 1,500 commercial vessels transit the Strait of Hormuz over recent months, carrying approximately 750 million barrels of oil.
CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper said the US military has continued efforts to protect commercial shipping and maintain the security of maritime routes through the strategic waterway.
According to CENTCOM, shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz have also been cleared of Iranian sea mines following a US-led mine-clearing operation.
The US military has described the waterway as open to commercial navigation, although shipping traffic remains significantly below normal levels.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy route, through which a substantial share of the world’s oil supplies normally passes. Any disruption to shipping through the strait can have significant implications for international energy markets and global trade.
US efforts to maintain maritime security come amid continued tensions in the region, with diplomatic efforts also focusing on restoring commercial shipping through the strait to normal levels.
