The Zhnan-Women’s Union of Kurdistan and Hiwa Cancer Hospital in Sulaymaniyah signed a memorandum of understanding on Sunday to launch the “Ship of Hope” project, aimed at raising awareness of breast cancer and promoting its early detection.

The memorandum was signed by the Union’s General Supervisor, Lava Hikmat, and Hiwa Cancer Hospital Director, Dr Yad Naqshbandi.

The project is designed to strengthen health awareness and encourage the early detection of breast cancer, with a particular focus on women aged 40 to 69 who have no symptoms.

The programme is based on two key screening measures: a comprehensive clinical breast and underarm examination (CBE) conducted by qualified medical professionals, and low-dose digital mammography to detect tumours before they become clinically noticeable.

The initiative also seeks to address gaps in access to healthcare services in remote areas of the Kurdistan Region, where residents may face difficulties reaching hospitals and specialised medical centres in urban areas.

Under the project, women will be able to receive essential breast cancer screening services closer to their homes, supporting prevention and early diagnosis and helping make breast cancer a more manageable disease.
