Qubad Talabani Calls for Greater Chinese Role in Kurdistan Development

Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani received Liu Jun, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China to the Kurdistan Region, on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, to discuss development and investment opportunities and ways to further strengthen cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and China.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the development process in the Kurdistan Region, economic growth and investment opportunities, as well as the importance of maintaining security and stability.
Talabani welcomed a more active role for China in supporting the Kurdistan Region’s development and stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two sides. He said expanded cooperation with China could contribute to the Region’s economic development while creating new opportunities for students and young people.
Liu Jun stressed that the Kurdistan Region’s stability and economic growth are of significant importance to China, reaffirming Beijing’s readiness to support the Region in these areas. He also expressed China’s willingness to play a more active role in supporting the Kurdistan Region’s economic development.
The meeting also addressed the expansion of cooperation in scientific and cultural fields, particularly in higher education. Talabani expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the Chinese government and its consulate in facilitating the admission of students from the Kurdistan Region to Chinese universities.
Liu Jun, for his part, expressed China’s readiness to provide greater facilities and opportunities for students from the Kurdistan Region seeking to pursue higher education at Chinese universities.
