The summit between PUK and the New Generation Movement
On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Supreme Council of the New Generation Movement issued a joint statement following a summit meeting in Sulaymaniyah. The two sides stressed the need to expedite the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) based on electoral entitlement, while addressing outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government.
The statement reads as follows:
A summit meeting was held today, Wednesday, September 9, 2026, between the Supreme Council of the New Generation Movement and the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan at the PUK Political Bureau headquarters in Sulaymaniyah.
The meeting discussed the situation in the Kurdistan Region and the formation of the new KRG cabinet. Both sides expressed their readiness to form the new cabinet based on electoral entitlement, with the aim of establishing a balanced government that enjoys the confidence of the people of Kurdistan and Iraq, as well as the international community, and is capable of finding fundamental solutions to the outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
We emphasise to all parties that the failure to form the government directly affects the lives, livelihoods and future of the Kurdistan Region. Therefore, any party that becomes the reason for the failure to form the government will be responsible to the people of Kurdistan and for anything that may happen in the future.
The meeting affirmed that, in order to end the current situation and achieve prosperity and a dignified life for the people of Kurdistan, we will pursue all possible avenues and solutions.
As always, the door to dialogue with our alliance remains open to all parties, based on the new reality that has emerged in the Kurdistan Region.
