Western Europe Endures Hottest Summer on Record.

The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service has reported that August 2026 was the hottest August ever recorded globally, while Western Europe experienced its hottest summer since records began.

According to Copernicus, the global average surface air temperature in August reached 16.96°C, exceeding the previous record set in July 2023 by 0.01°C. The service also described summer 2026 as the hottest summer on record in Western Europe.

Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, operated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, said in a report published on Thursday that August 2026 was “an extraordinary month in the history of the global climate”.

She added that humanity had likely not experienced temperatures as high as those recorded today for at least 100,000 years.

From New York to Tokyo, and from Rome to New Delhi, the summer of 2026 was marked by extreme heat across the Northern Hemisphere. The unusually high temperatures disrupted daily life, affecting everyone from bicycle delivery workers and construction crews to beachgoers and vulnerable people exposed to extreme heat in their homes.
