PUK Spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) is ready for Kurdistan's parliamentary elections and the party's spokesperson stated: "We have never been afraid of elections, and we are ready to participate in the elections even if they are held tomorrow."
The PUK is a historical political party among the people
"The PUK is fully equipped for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections, having recently undergone elections," PUK spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire told PUKMEDIA. "Furthermore, the PUK is a long-standing political party among the people, with a long history of election participation. Following each election, the party has consistently demonstrated its willingness to run in subsequent elections."
"The leader of the PUK faction in the fifth term of the Kurdistan Parliament filed a lawsuit in the Federal Court, seeking the declaration of five articles of the Kurdistan electoral law as unconstitutional as we believe that such a decision would be advantageous, and any alternative decision would be unjust," Pire said of the PUK's demand for the next Kurdistan parliamentary elections. "The PUK, on the other hand, will follow and honour any decision made by the Federal Court."
The PUK has filed a lawsuit against five articles of the electoral law
Ziad Jabar, leader of the PUK faction in the fifth term of the Kurdistan Parliament, filed the complaint against Articles (1-9-15-22-36) of the Kurdistan Parliament's Electoral Law.
The PUK intends to enforce the legislation of the Iraqi Kurdistan National Assembly in the upcoming legislative elections on February 25th. The Kurdistan Front passed this legislation in 1992. According to National Assembly legislation, the electoral system in Kurdistan will transition from a single constituency to many constituencies.
The Kurdistan Parliament now has 111 seats, 11 of which are quota seats, five for Chaldeans, Syrians, and Assyrians, five for Turkmen, and one for Armenians. If the court rules in favour of the PUK, the judges will be in charge of overseeing the election process rather than the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC). Furthermore, the number of quota seats for minorities will be reduced from 11 to only five, all of which will be reserved for Christians.
Several sessions of the Federal Court have been postponed regarding the PUK's case against the Kurdistan Parliament. The following meeting is scheduled for December 27.
