The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has completed all necessary arrangements for the forthcoming parliamentary elections, which are set to occur on June 10, 2024. As per the remarks made by PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani and the official statement from the PUK's Political Bureau, the PUK strongly advocates for the elections to take place as planned and opposes any delay in the election schedule.
Elections Serve Kurdistan Region's Structure
Arez Abdullah, a member of the PUK's Leadership Council, stated to PUKMEDIA that the PUK insists on holding election on schedule and will not alter its decision as the preservation of the Kurdistan Region's structure relies on the principles of democracy and the conduct of elections.
Abdulla continued, "Despite multiple postponements, we believe that the current deadline for the elections is appropriate for carrying out the process and benefiting the structure of the Kurdistan Region and its citizens. Without elections, government institutions will remain as an executive government and will continue to operate with no oversight or representation from the public. This will weaken the Kurdistan Region's position within Iraq and internationally, impeding the political and democratic process. It will also call the Kurdistan Region's experience into question, and the situation may deteriorate beyond its current state."
PUK is Ready for Elections
Head of the PUK's Elections Bureau Rizgar Haji Hama told PUKMEDIA, "The PUK supports the Kurdistan parliamentary elections on June 10, 2024, as decreed by the President of the Kurdistan Region."
"The PUK has completed all necessary arrangements and is opposed to delaying the elections. We encourage all other political parties to take part in the elections," stated Haji Hama.
"We have formally presented the list of candidates for the four electoral constituencies (Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, Duhok, and Halabja) to the IHEC, signifying our readiness for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections," he added.
Over1,000 Polling Stations Will be Opened
The Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), which is supervising the forthcoming Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections, will open over polling stations for the election, according to IHEC spokeswoman Jumana Ghalai.
"The IHEC has made the decision to establish 1,266 polling stations for the upcoming parliamentary elections. These stations will consist of 6,542 polling units, all of which will be monitored by cameras," Ghalai told PUKMEDIA.
A total of 20 political parties, 2 coalitions, and 62 independent candidates are registered to take part in the forthcoming parliamentary elections throughout all four constituencies of Kurdistan, according to Dr. Haiman Tahsin Hamid, Director General of the Office of Political Parties and Organizations Affairs of the IHEC.
The Kurdistan Region has a total of 3,789,360 voters, out of whom over 2,900,000 have successfully registered in the biometric registration and are expected to take part in the elections in all four constituencies of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, and Halabja.
