Hiwa Hospital in Sulaymaniyah Province has released the cancer patient statistics for 2024, stating that over 3,000 children and adults were diagnosed with cancer last year. The director of Hiwa Hospital said: "The rise in numbers should not be a cause for fear; rather, officials need to focus on the early detection of cancer."
In 2024, 210 Children Were Diagnosed With Cancer
In its annual cancer registration report, Hiwa Hospital stated: "According to the Cancer Registration Department's report for 2024, the total number of new cancer cases was 3,310, of which 210 were children."
The hospital also stated: "In 2023, the total number of cancer patients was 3,285, including both adults and children."
The Increase in Cancer Cases Is Not Alarming
Earlier, Dr. Yad Naqshbandi, director of Hiwa Hospital, told PUKMEDIA: “Despite the financial challenges, we have managed to provide high-level services to cancer patients, and these financial difficulties have not affected our services in Iraq and the region. Therefore, we would like to express our gratitude to all the doctors and staff at our hospital, who have consistently shown care and support in treating our patients."
On the other hand, he said: "Sulaymaniyah is the capital of cancer treatment and bone marrow transplantation in the region and Iraq. The rise in cancer cases continues both locally and globally. In 2019, there were 2,675 cases, but in 2024, this number increased to 3,310, marking a rise of 1,000 cases in five years.
The increase in statistics does not mean that citizens should be fearful, but rather, the government and relevant authorities must focus on the early detection of cancer at the highest level."
Hiwa Hospital, opened in 2007 in Sulaymaniyah, is a centre dedicated to the treatment of all types of cancer, offering all hospital services free of charge. In terms of medical services and high-quality healthcare, it ranks first in Iraq for cancer treatment.
