Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on 10 September during a public speaking event at Utah Valley University. The incident occurred around 20 minutes into Kirk’s “American Comeback Tour” address, which aimed to engage students in discussions on free speech and political ideology.
According to witnesses, a single gunshot was fired from a distance, causing panic among attendees. Kirk was struck in the neck and later died at a nearby hospital. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the identity of the assailant, and while a person of interest was briefly detained, they were released following questioning. The FBI is leading the investigation and has appealed to the public for any information that could assist in identifying the shooter.
The motive behind the attack remains unknown. The incident has attracted national attention, highlighting concerns over the safety of public figures and the growing discourse on political violence in the United States.
The US President, Donald Trump, responded swiftly to the tragedy. Trump, a close ally of Kirk, described him as a “martyr for truth and freedom” and criticised what he termed the rhetoric of the “radical left.” Flags were ordered to be lowered to half-mast until 14 September in Kirk’s honour. Former Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton issued statements expressing their condolences and calling for civility and unity.
As investigations continue, law enforcement authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward. The incident has sparked widespread debate about political polarisation and the security of individuals participating in public events.
