Imad Ahmed, member of the Political Bureau and head of the Media and Awareness Office of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), visited Khanaqin district on Saturday, 1 November 2025.
At the beginning of his visit, Ahmed met with members of the PUK’s Khanaqin Organisations Centre. Sherko Mirwais, head of the branch, discussed the ongoing election campaign, stating: “The people of Khanaqin are fighting like Peshmergas to support the PUK’s List 222. 11 November will be a day of great victory for the PUK and the Kurds in Khanaqin, because it is—and will remain—the home of the PUK.”
In his remarks, Ahmed praised the dedication and efforts of the PUK cadres in Khanaqin’s election campaign, reaffirming that the party attaches great importance to Khanaqin and other disputed areas.
“The PUK’s policy is to provide services to all these areas without discrimination,” he said, “because their people have made many sacrifices for the Kurdism and for preserving the Kurdish identity of their regions.”
Speaking about the upcoming elections, Ahmed stressed that: “The victory of the PUK’s List 222 is a victory for all the people, because the power of the PUK in Baghdad is the power of the people.”
He called on all citizens to unite in support of the PUK and its list to ensure success in the elections.
The disputed areas, often referred to as the “in-between areas,” encompass Kirkuk, Shingal [Sinjar], Makhmur, Tal Afar, Khanaqin, and others. These regions are characterised by ethnically and religiously diverse populations—including Kurds, Arabs, and Turkmen—and contain significant oil and gas reserves. Under the former Ba’ath regime, Arabisation policies forcibly displaced many Kurds, replacing them with Arab settlers. Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution was designed to address the complex identity and administrative issues of these areas, mandating a process of normalisation, census, and referendum to determine their final status.
The PUK is contesting the 2025 Iraqi parliamentary elections, scheduled for 11 November, across several governorates, presenting its candidates on an independent list numbered 222 in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah (including Halabja), Duhok, Kirkuk, and Diyala. In Nineveh Governorate, the PUK is running as part of the "Nineveh People’s Union Coalition" with number 281, while in Saladin it is fielding one candidate within the "National Masses Coalition" with number 240.
Overall, the PUK is entering the elections with 156 candidates: 36 in Sulaymaniyah, 30 in Erbil, 5 in Duhok, 24 in Kirkuk, 28 in Diyala, 31 in Nineveh within the Nineveh People’s Union Coalition, and one candidate each in Saladin and Baghdad.
