The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Friday the successful transfer of ISIS detainees from Syria to Iraq.
In a statement, the Command said the operation, which commenced on 12 February, was completed after a night-time flight from north-eastern Syria to Iraq. It noted that the objective was to ensure the secure and continued detention of ISIS suspects in Iraqi custody.
The statement added that the 23-day operation, which concluded on 21 January, saw US forces transfer more than 5,700 ISIS detainees from facilities in Syria to Iraqi authorities.
According to the statement, the Commander of US Central Command, Admiral Brad Cooper, commended the personnel involved, saying: “Well done to all members of the Combined Joint Task Force who carried out this demanding mission on the ground and in the air with great focus and professionalism, in coordination with our regional partners.” He also expressed appreciation for Iraq’s leadership, stating that the transfer of detainees was vital to regional security.
The Command further clarified that US and Coalition forces, operating under the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), led the planning, coordination and implementation of the mission. Major General Kevin Lambert, Commander of the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve, said he was “extremely proud” of the coalition’s efforts, adding that the orderly and secure transfer of detainees would help prevent the resurgence of ISIS in Syria.
