Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), stated that Western Kurdistan (Rojava), North and East Syria, is entering a new phase marked by growing international efforts to guarantee the region’s rights.
In an interview with Media Khabar TV, Abdi said that, for the first time, there are concrete steps toward recognising the leadership of Western Kurdistan, including its military command. He added that all influential parties involved in the Syrian crisis have strengthened their relations with the SDF, noting that this development would have positive implications for the region’s future.
Abdi referred to the 29 January agreement with the Syrian Interim Government, saying it was reached without opposition and has received international attention. He explained that the agreement was discussed during meetings held in Munich, including talks with Marco Rubio. According to Abdi, Rubio stressed that stability in Syria and the January 29 agreement are among the top priorities of Donald Trump.
He further revealed that they had received an official message from U.S. envoy to Syria Tom Barrack indicating that the the U.S. President is aware of the agreement, monitoring its progress, and has expressed support for it.
Abdi cautioned, however, that agreements are not based solely on trust, recalling that conflict erupted following the 10 March agreement in the past. While he did not rule out the possibility of renewed hostilities, he stressed that every effort would be made to ensure the success of the current agreement.
The SDF commander emphasised that the primary objective of the agreement and ongoing meetings is to safeguard the unity, security and safety of the people. He also praised the stance taken by the population during previous conflicts, describing the national unity demonstrated at that time as a source of pride.
