The Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) have reached an agreement to resume oil exports through the northern pipeline to the Turkish port of Ceyhan, following days of heightened tensions and mutual accusations.
The development comes after Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), called for unity and dialogue, warning against unilateral decisions and political point-scoring amid rising tensions in the Kurdistan Region.
In a statement, the KRG said: “Considering the emergency situation facing the country and the responsibility we all share to overcome this difficult phase, we have decided to allow oil to flow through the Kurdistan Region's pipeline as soon as possible.”
The statement added that negotiations with the federal government would continue to urgently lift restrictions on imports and trade movement in the Kurdistan Region, as well as to provide guarantees for oil and gas companies to safely resume production.
Meanwhile, Iraqi Oil Minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani said that oil exports from the Kurdistan Region are expected to resume within the next 24 hours at an initial rate of 250,000 barrels per day.
Srwa Mohammed, a PUK lawmaker in the Iraqi parliament, told PUKMEDIA that an agreement had been reached between Baghdad and Erbil, confirming that exports are set to resume on Wednesday.
