The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has extended its warmest congratulations to journalists and media workers on the 128th anniversary of the birth of Kurdish journalism, reaffirming its continued commitment to supporting media professionals and promoting a freer media environment.
In a statement marking the occasion, the Politburo paid tribute to journalists, media figures, and activists across Kurdistan, recognising their longstanding role in advancing public awareness and national identity. The statement highlighted the historic significance of the Kurdistan newspaper, first published in April 1898 by Mir Miqdad Bedirkhan, describing it as the foundation of a movement that paved the way for Kurdish-language expression, modern thought, and a flourishing journalistic tradition.
The Politburo noted that for over a century, Kurdish journalism has served as a vital civil and democratic tool, amplifying the voices, rights, and demands of the Kurdish people. It stressed that, in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, continued development in journalism and communication technologies offers significant opportunities to better serve society through accurate news, information, and responsible messaging.
The statement also honoured veteran journalists and those who lost their lives in the line of duty, referring to them as “martyrs of the pen”. It reiterated the PUK’s longstanding policy of supporting media professionals and strengthening an environment that guarantees freedom of press and adapts to ongoing changes in the field.
The message concluded with renewed congratulations to the Kurdish journalistic community.
