Swedish Social Democratic Party Leader Magdalena Andersson has extended her congratulations on the election of Nizar Amedi as President of the Republic of Iraq, in a formal message addressed to Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
In her message, Andersson described Iraq as facing a complex period marked by regional instability, ongoing conflicts, and internal political pressures. She noted that public discourse in the country is often influenced by sectarian divisions, warning that such dynamics risk deepening societal fragmentation rather than encouraging unity.
She emphasised the importance of constructive political engagement in Iraq, particularly at a time when the wider region remains uncertain. Andersson highlighted the role of the PUK as a potentially stabilising force, stressing its relevance in promoting social cohesion, democratic values, and justice.
While acknowledging the challenges ahead, she noted that the new president has been given a clear mandate to address pressing political and social issues. Andersson expressed hope that his election would help foster greater cooperation among Iraq’s political forces and strengthen the country’s position both regionally and internationally.
She concluded by wishing the new Iraqi President success in fulfilling his responsibilities in service of the Iraqi people and their future, and extended her highest consideration to President Talabani.
