The first phase of the unification of the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces under the First and Second Regional Commands officially began on Tuesday in the presence of Kurdistan Region's Minister of Peshmerga Affairs Shoresh Ismail.
Speaking at the ceremony marking the launch of the first phase, Minister Ismail described the initiative as a decisive milestone in the unification of the Peshmerga forces.
"This step will be a decisive achievement in the unification of the Peshmerga forces, and from now on, our forces will be equipped with the latest modern military methods and tactics," he said.
The Minister also highlighted the role of the Global Coalition, saying it had stood alongside the Peshmerga throughout the fight against terrorism and had remained a strong supporter.
He added that the Peshmerga are no longer viewed solely as an armed force but have demonstrated to the world that they are a solid shield against terrorism and have become an internationally recognised symbol of resilience.
Minister Ismail stressed that strengthening the capabilities of the Peshmerga would contribute to broader regional security and stability, describing the force as the true guarantor of protecting the rights of the people of Kurdistan.
Outlining the Ministry's new strategy, he said the establishment of the First and Second Regional Commands, together with 11 military divisions, represents a crucial strategic step towards building a unified national army for Kurdistan.
