Siezed Iraqi dinars.
The investigating judge at Iraq's Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court has announced the seizure of 25 billion Iraqi dinars, US$1 million and nearly five kilograms of gold jewellery in connection with the case involving the detained Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Refining Affairs, Adnan al-Jumaili, and his alleged accomplices.
According to a statement issued by the Judicial Media Office, the judge said the latest seizure followed a detailed investigation aimed at recovering funds allegedly obtained through the misuse of public money in projects carried out by the accused and other individuals implicated in the case. The cash was reportedly discovered concealed inside plastic water bottles hidden at the accused's home in Tikrit.
The judge added that the total assets seized so far have reached 127 billion Iraqi dinars and US$24 million, in addition to real estate, vehicles and gold jewellery confiscated as part of the investigation.
He stressed that investigations remain ongoing and that efforts to identify and pursue other individuals linked to the case will continue until all legal procedures have been completed.
On 28 June, the Iraqi authorities launched operation Dawn Crackdown (Sawlat al-Fajr), a nationwide anti-corruption campaign ordered by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi. The operation targets current and former government officials, members of parliament, politicians, business owners, ministers, directors-general, provincial governors and other individuals suspected of corruption.
