Iraqi President Calls for Stronger Legal Protection for Orphaned Children

Iraqi President Nizar Amedi stressed that protecting children, particularly orphans, is a national and humanitarian responsibility, calling for stronger legal safeguards and the swift enactment of legislation to shield them from all forms of abuse during a visit on Saturday to the Iraqi Home Foundation for Creativity, which is dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of orphaned and abused children.

The foundation’s director, Hisham al-Dhahabi, received President Amedi and briefed him on the foundation’s programmes and activities supporting the care and rehabilitation of orphaned and abused children.

“Building a safe and stable Iraq begins with protecting its children,” President Amedi said, adding that providing children with legal and humanitarian guarantees is essential to securing a better future. He stressed that caring for orphaned children is both a national and humanitarian priority and a shared responsibility of state institutions and society, and that safeguarding their rights and ensuring a safe environment are constitutional and moral obligations.

During the visit, the President called for expanding social, psychological and educational support programmes to promote children’s healthy development, protect their dignity and provide them with equal opportunities to grow and lead dignified lives. He also underscored the need to accelerate the enactment of legislation that would provide orphaned children with comprehensive legal protection against all forms of abuse.

Al-Dhahabi outlined the foundation’s child protection programmes in Iraq, highlighting its continued efforts to nurture children’s talents, empower them and promote their effective integration into society.

The President also toured the foundation’s departments, inspected its educational, rehabilitation and psychological care facilities, and received a briefing on its child care approach and the services it provides.
