Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi welcomed US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and his accompanying delegation to his residence in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday evening (Baghdad time).
During the meeting, the Prime Minister highlighted that Iraq is at a crucial stage in its development, working to establish a strong and sovereign state, eradicate corruption, and build a resilient and sustainable economy. He said the government has made tackling corruption and ensuring the state's exclusive authority over the use of force among its foremost priorities through a series of key initiatives.
Al-Zaidi noted that Iraqis are expected to see the benefits of these measures over the coming year, with progress anticipated across a range of sectors, particularly energy and investment, alongside further improvements in stability. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to implementing comprehensive reforms of the banking and insurance sectors, as well as tax and customs systems, with the aim of creating a more efficient, diversified and sustainable economy.
For his part, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reaffirmed Washington's support for the Iraqi government's policies and its determined efforts to transform bilateral relations from a predominantly military partnership into one centred on investment, economic development and private sector growth. He said this approach would help achieve sustainable economic growth through the effective use of Iraq's resources and economic potential.
Bessent also underscored the United States' readiness to support Iraq in implementing its economic plans and reform programmes, overcoming barriers to development, and establishing a clear framework to strengthen the Iraqi economy while advancing financial and economic reforms.
