Iraqi PM chairs a National Security Council meeting.
The National Security Council held an emergency meeting on Wednesday, chaired by Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ali al-Zaidi.
The council condemned the attack, noting that it took place while the Iraqi government was in contact with the relevant parties to address concerns raised by Saudi Arabia and the United States regarding attacks targeting Saudi territory.
During the meeting, the National Security Council approved the development of a comprehensive security plan aimed at protecting Iraq’s security, preventing violations of the country’s sovereignty, and ensuring that Iraqi territory is not used as a base to threaten neighbouring states.
The council also reaffirmed the government’s firm opposition to all acts of aggression, regardless of those responsible or the reasons cited, stressing that responding to and addressing such incidents falls solely within the authority of the Iraqi government and its constitutional institutions.
Furthermore, the council reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting regional stability, contributing to international peace and security, and pursuing a foreign policy based on dialogue, co-operation, respect for international law, and the principles of good neighbourly relations. It also called on all parties to avoid actions that could further destabilise the region.
The National Security Council also reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the security agreement governing the withdrawal of the international coalition by the end of September 2026, while completing the necessary measures to bring all weapons under state control.
