The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has issued a statement marking the 12th anniversary of the occupation of Shingal (Sinjar) and the genocide committed against the Yazidi community.
The statement reads:
“The painful memory of the genocide against the Yazidis in Shingal remains a tragedy that we will never forget. It is a lasting stain of shame on those responsible from ISIS, as well as on those whose negligence and indifference contributed to this horrific crime.
On this solemn occasion, we reaffirm our unwavering support for protecting the rights and dignity of our Yazidi brothers and sisters, enabling them to live in peace and with pride in their ancestral homeland.
To overcome the devastating legacy of the Yazidi genocide, Shingal and its surrounding areas require greater reconstruction efforts and fair compensation for the victims, through the joint responsibility of both the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Federal Government of Iraq.
We bow our heads to the souls of the martyrs of this crime.
We extend our deepest respect to the families of the martyrs, the victims and all those affected by the Shingal genocide.”
