Kirkuk city.
The city of Sulaymaniyah hosted a seminar on Wednesday organised by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s Centre for General Studies under the title “Kirkuk and the Kurdish Areas: The Dangers of a New Arabisation Campaign.” The event featured Fahmi Burhan, Chairman of the General Board of Kurdistani Areas Outside the Region.
During the seminar, Burhan outlined the challenges facing the Kurdish areas outside the Kurdistan Region Administration, warning of what he described as a “new wave of Arabisation” targeting several areas, including Kirkuk, Khanaqin, Khurmatu, Shingal, Zummar and the Nineveh Plain.
He reviewed the commission’s efforts and initiatives to address these developments, stressing the need for a unified position among the Kurdish leadership, the Kurdistan Regional Government, political parties, and academic and cultural figures. He also emphasised the importance of adhering to the Iraqi Constitution as the basis for protecting the demographic identity of the Kurdish areas.
Participants in the seminar likewise underscored the need to develop a unified and comprehensive Kurdish strategy aimed at safeguarding Kurdish identity and strengthening the constitutional rights of residents in Kirkuk and other disputed territories outside the Kurdistan Region Administration.
