Iraqi Parliament Concludes Session After First Reading of Five Bills

The Iraqi Parliament concluded its 12th session on Monday, with 183 lawmakers in attendance, after completing the first reading of five bills.
Among the most prominent were amendments to the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law, the Arbitration Law, and a bill concerning Iraq’s accession to the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
According to a statement from the Parliament’s Media Office, a copy of which was obtained by PUKMEDIA, lawmakers conducted the first reading of amendments to the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law. The proposed amendments include tougher penalties, the establishment of specialised anti-narcotics units at land, air and sea border crossings, and the creation of a fund to support efforts to combat and detect narcotics and psychotropic substances.
Parliament also conducted the first reading of the Arbitration Law, which aims to develop Iraq’s arbitration system in line with international standards, promote investment and safeguard investors’ interests.
In the energy sector, lawmakers reviewed a bill on Iraq’s accession to the Framework Agreement for the Establishment of the International Solar Alliance. The legislation seeks to promote renewable energy, reduce emissions and support sustainable development.
The session also featured discussions on simplifying procedures for obtaining housing fund loans, addressing delays in salary payments and directing salaries through banks. Other issues raised included creating employment opportunities for graduates, supporting farmers, completing stalled projects and improving electricity supplies to citizens.
