Iraqi President: Regional Developments Require Prioritising Dialogue and Understanding

Iraqi President Nizar Amedi received at Al-Salam Palace in Baghdad the Envoy of Libya’s Government of National Unity and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Taher Salem Al-Baour, along with his accompanying delegation. 

According to a statement by the Iraqi Presidency, President Amedi welcomed the delegation and emphasised the importance of further strengthening relations between Iraq and Libya and broadening cooperation in areas that serve the shared interests of the two brotherly peoples, particularly in the economic sector and in navigating the transformations of the global market economy.

The President also expressed his hopes for the success of the Iraqi-Libyan Joint Committee, wishing its deliberations to yield outcomes that advance bilateral cooperation and deepen ties between the two countries.

Against the backdrop of a critical phase for the region, President Amedi stressed the need to prioritise dialogue and mutual understanding and pursue solutions that serve the interests of peoples. He reaffirmed Iraq’s support for a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political solution, while underscoring Baghdad’s firm commitment to Libya’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as to efforts aimed at achieving lasting stability, respecting the will of the Libyan people and rejecting all forms of interference in the country’s internal affairs.

The discussions also covered developments across the Arab and international arenas, with both sides emphasizing the importance of closer consultation and coordination in confronting current challenges and supporting security and stability throughout the region.

For his part, Al-Baour conveyed the greetings of the Prime Minister of Libya’s Government of National Unity to President Amedi, reaffirming his country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expressing appreciation for Iraq’s principled positions and its continued support for Libya’s stability and security.
