Oil prices fell sharply early on Wednesday, extending losses from the previous session after Iran announced that it had resumed talks with Oman on the possible reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

News of the discussions largely overshadowed the United States’ decision earlier this week to impose tougher economic sanctions on Iran.

US crude futures fell 1.7% to $81.01 a barrel after dropping more than 3% in the previous session. Brent crude futures also declined by 5.6% on Tuesday.

The latest losses followed Iran’s announcement that it had resumed talks with neighbouring Oman on facilitating commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The two countries said they had discussed establishing a “joint and temporary shipping corridor” through the strategic waterway.

The prospect of restoring commercial traffic through Hormuz weighed on oil prices as traders reduced their assessment of supply risks. The announcement came after Iran allowed several Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the strait.

However, shipping traffic remains well below pre-war levels, keeping oil supplies from the region constrained. Before the conflict, around 20% of global oil supplies passed through the Strait of Hormuz, and disruptions to the waterway have severely affected global supply and pushed prices higher.

The renewed Iran-Oman talks came just one day after Washington imposed tougher economic sanctions on Tehran, highlighting the US administration’s current preference for economic pressure over direct military action against Iran.
