The Swedish flag flies in front of the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm.
Sweden will hold general elections on 13 September 2026 to elect the 349 members of the Riksdag, with 30 Kurdish candidates from the Social Democratic Party standing in parliamentary, regional and municipal elections.
Of the 30 candidates, nine are running for seats in the Swedish Parliament, 13 are contesting regional elections and 14 are standing in municipal elections. Two candidates contesting municipal seats are also running for the Riksdag, while some candidates are standing in more than one election.
Political observers say Kurdish participation in Sweden’s political life has increased significantly in recent years. The growing number of Kurdish candidates representing different political parties has strengthened Kurdish representation in Sweden’s decision-making institutions and provided greater opportunities for Kurdish issues to be raised on the political stage.
The Kurdish community in Sweden has a long history of political participation, with members elected to both the Swedish Parliament and local councils.
In the 2018 general elections, six Kurdish candidates won seats in the Swedish Parliament. Several political parties, including the Social Democratic Party, the Left Party and the Liberal Party, have also fielded Kurdish candidates over the years.
Sweden’s Kurdish community is estimated to number nearly 150,000 people, many of whom are eligible to vote.
