AfD Scores Historic Victory in Saxony-Anhalt, Exit Polls Show

Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) scored a historic victory in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, according to exit polls released on Sunday, dealing a major blow to Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservatives. However, it remained unclear whether the result would be enough for the AfD to form a government.

The AfD secured 44.5 per cent of the vote, according to exit polls conducted for ARD broadcaster, up sharply from 20.8 per cent in 2021.

Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) fell to 18.5 per cent from 37.1 per cent in 2021, marking a significant setback in a state where the conservatives have governed since 2002.

Most political parties have ruled out joining an AfD-led coalition, meaning the party would likely need to secure an outright majority of seats to take power.
