The recent visits and meetings of Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), have developed beyond protocol, reflecting a consistent political approach centred on the belief that challenges should be addressed through dialogue, mutual understanding and peaceful engagement.

President Bafel’s latest meetings, including his current visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran, have highlighted the PUK’s emphasis on dialogue and its efforts to facilitate communication and rapprochement among different parties. His engagements have also focused on promoting peace, safeguarding stability and encouraging dialogue as a means of addressing political and regional challenges.

Recognition of the Role of President Bafel Jalal Talabani and the PUK

During his visit to Tehran, President Bafel Jalal Talabani met with Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in the presence of a senior PUK delegation.

The two sides discussed the latest political and military developments in the region. President Bafel stressed the importance of pursuing peaceful solutions and maintaining continuous dialogue to address regional challenges.

He also highlighted the PUK’s efforts to support peace and reduce tensions, stressing that the Kurdistan Region respects the security and sovereignty of neighbouring countries and maintains deep and longstanding ties with the Iranian people.

For his part, Foreign Minister Araghchi expressed appreciation for the role of President Bafel and the PUK in efforts to safeguard stability in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the wider region.

A Significant Role In Political Dynamics

President Bafel Jalal Talabani also met with Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Islamic Consultative Assembly, in Tehran.

The meeting, attended by a senior PUK delegation, focused on bilateral relations and ways to strengthen cooperation in the mutual interests of both sides, as well as efforts to consolidate security and stability.

President Bafel stressed that the Kurdistan Region should not become part of any war or conflict, and that efforts should instead focus on maintaining security and reducing tensions.

Ghalibaf, for his part, described the PUK’s role in political developments as significant and expressed his readiness to support initiatives aimed at strengthening relations between the two sides.

Bridging Perspectives

President Bafel also met with Dr Ali Akbar Velayati, Special Adviser to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran on international affairs.

The meeting covered the political and security situation in the region and ways to preserve stability, with discussions focusing on protecting mutual interests and strengthening good-neighbourly relations.

President Bafel outlined the PUK’s approach to the current situation, stressing that neither the Kurdistan Region nor Iraq should become part of regional conflicts and that efforts should instead focus on easing tensions and promoting lasting stability.

Dr Velayati also recalled the role of the late President Mam Jalal in establishing historic and friendly relations between Iran, the Kurdistan Region and the PUK. He expressed appreciation for President Bafel’s approach and highlighted his role in bringing different perspectives closer together and contributing to security and stability in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the wider region.
