Deputy PM, Italian Ambassador Discuss New KRG Cabinet and Baghdad-Erbil Relations

Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met with Niccolò Fontana, Italy’s Ambassador to Iraq, to discuss a range of issues of mutual interest.

The meeting, held today, Wednesday (16 September 2026), was attended by Tommaso Sansone, Italy’s Consul General in the Kurdistan Region. The two sides discussed efforts to form the new KRG cabinet, stressing the importance of establishing a service-oriented government founded on genuine partnership and capable of responding to the needs of the current phase.

The discussions also covered Iraq’s political situation and relations between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government. Both sides underscored the need for greater cooperation and coordination between the KRG and Baghdad to safeguard Iraq’s security and stability, resolve outstanding issues, support economic development and provide better services to citizens.
