Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani has stressed the importance of continuing reforms and strengthening the institutional and professional foundations of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs. He also emphasised the need to unify the salaries and financial entitlements of the Peshmerga forces with those of their counterparts in Iraq’s federal defence institutions.
Talabani made the remarks during a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, 23 September 2026. Part of the meeting focused on the unification of the Peshmerga forces and efforts to strengthen institutional operations within the ministry.
Talabani congratulated all those involved in the successful unification of the Peshmerga forces, describing it as a “national and institutional achievement”. He stressed the importance of protecting the progress made and continuing the reform process to further consolidate a professional, organised and unified military institution.
The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of completing the steps required to unify Peshmerga salaries and financial entitlements, ensuring parity with personnel in Iraq’s federal defence institutions. He further called for continued efforts to strengthen institutional coordination and integration.
During its weekly meeting, the Council of Ministers discussed several issues related to the unification of the Peshmerga forces, as part of ongoing efforts to consolidate their unity and further develop their institutional structure.
