Iran’s security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, said on Sunday that Washington’s response to Tehran’s seven conditions for reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz was “insufficient”, according to Iranian state media.

Iran presented a proposal on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly under which the waterway could reopen and normal maritime traffic resume within seven days if its conditions were met. The United States subsequently responded through Qatari intermediaries.

Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Washington needed to clarify issues that remained unclear to Tehran.

“We presented seven conditions to the Americans and clearly stated that the Strait of Hormuz would not be opened to them, and no negotiations would take place, until these conditions are met,” he was quoted as saying.

Rezaei added that Iran was “no longer in the process of responding to the Americans”.

“In their response, they have accepted some of our conditions, while others remain unclear,” he said.

Tehran said in late September that it had received a US response to its latest proposal to revive the collapsed ceasefire in the Gulf. This came days after US President Donald Trump said he had rejected the proposal.

Qatar and other mediators have continued to relay messages between Washington and Tehran in an effort to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route that carried around one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies before the war began in late February with US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
