At least 10 vessels have been attacked in or near the Strait of Hormuz since Sunday, marking the highest number of incidents since the conflict began, according to security and maritime data cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Data from security firm Vanguard, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) show that six vessels were targeted on Sunday, the highest number of attacks recorded in a single day since the outbreak of the conflict. A further four vessels came under attack on Tuesday.

Maritime sources have reported that two sailors are missing, while reports indicate that a container ship sank following the latest attacks.

The number of recorded attacks since the beginning of October has risen to 23, almost twice the monthly average since the conflict began. The incidents have disrupted shipping through one of the Gulf states’ most important routes for oil and commodity exports.

Baron Gupta, an analyst at Vanguard, said shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz had recovered to around 80 per cent of pre-conflict levels, with oil flows also rebounding, before the latest escalation.

Iran began targeting commercial vessels in the Strait in March in retaliation for US and Israeli strikes on its territory. It has continued to attack ships using routes it has not authorised.

According to the IMO, around 24 sailors have been killed in incidents near the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict began.
