Iraq’s Parliament is scheduled to hold its 26th session today, Thursday, to vote on completing the federal government’s cabinet.
Srwa Mohammed, an MP from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc, told PUKMEDIA that parliamentary blocs had reached an agreement to vote on candidates for four Deputy Prime Minister posts and nine vacant ministerial portfolios during today’s session.
She added that proposals had also been raised to establish three new ministries: Tourism, State for Minority Affairs, and Digital Economy and Governance.
However, she said creating new ministries would be difficult under Iraq’s current circumstances, as they would require additional funding and budget allocations. She said the outcome would depend on developments during today’s session.
Previously, Asos Ali, another MP from the PUK bloc, told PUKMEDIA that Parliament was expected to vote on candidates for the Deputy Prime Minister positions, as well as vacant ministerial portfolios and proposed new ministries.
He said a vote on the candidates was expected to take place today, adding that two of the positions—one Deputy Prime Minister post and the Ministry of Construction and Housing—were allocated to the Kurds.
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi had proposed holding the parliamentary session on Thursday, 15 October 2026, to vote on candidates for the Deputy Prime Minister posts and the vacant and newly proposed ministerial portfolios.
