Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi visited the Ministry of Oil headquarters in Baghdad on Sunday for the second time since his government was formed five months ago, calling for increased oil revenues and expanded production capacity.
Al-Zaidi chaired a meeting with senior ministry officials, attended by the Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs, the Ministers of Oil and Electricity, the head of the Advisory Board and several energy advisers.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister praised ministry staff for their efforts and stressed the need for continued diligence and a strong sense of responsibility to achieve planned targets for expanding oil production capacity.
He also emphasised the importance of increasing oil revenues, saying the government intended to introduce a series of significant measures, particularly as Iraq is among the countries affected by ongoing regional developments.
Al-Zaidi called for lessons to be learned from past mistakes and for existing shortcomings to be addressed. He referred to his directives to the Integrity Commission to investigate corruption cases that had contributed to negligence and the loss of opportunities to develop the country’s vital oil sector.
He added that the Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs would be tasked with overseeing the Ministry of Oil’s operations, including matters related to production and exports.
