210 Cadets Graduate as Officers from Qalachwalan Military College

A total of 210 cadets were commissioned as officers during a special graduation ceremony held on Sunday, 21 June 2026, following the successful completion of nine months of military training at the Qalachwalan Military College. The newly commissioned officers are expected to return to their respective units within the security forces and continue their service.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani attended the ceremony alongside Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, Kurdistan Region Vice President Mustafa Sayed Qadir, Kurdistan Region Minister of Peshmerga Affairs Shoresh Ismail, senior government and security officials, and military officers.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani delivered a speech at the ceremony, in which he highlighted the significant role played by the late President Mam Jalal in supporting the Peshmerga forces and establishing Qalachwalan Military College.

He stressed the importance of unifying the Peshmerga forces into a single national force, noting that the Peshmerga have played a vital role in defending the Kurdistan Region and protecting it from various threats.

He also emphasised the need to further develop the capabilities of the Peshmerga forces in line with modern military standards, ensuring they are fully prepared to confront terrorism, extremism and other security challenges.

"From this day forward, your responsibility will be even greater. You must protect the foundations of coexistence and tolerance that have made the Kurdistan Region a haven for people of all religions, sects and communities living in freedom and security. Do not become part of conflicts; instead, be protectors of all citizens without exception," he said.

The Kurdistan Region President also stressed the importance of political unity and cooperation among all parties.

"The future and stability of the Kurdistan Region are best secured when we remain united and place the higher national interest above all other considerations. All components of Kurdistan form part of the identity of this beautiful homeland, and this diversity is a source of strength for Kurdistan," he said.

Barzani also expressed gratitude to the international coalition for its support in helping Iraq and the Kurdistan Region combat and defeat terrorism. He also thanked international partners and allies who have supported the ongoing process of unifying the Peshmerga forces.

He further emphasised the shared future of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, expressing the Kurdistan Region's commitment to working with the federal government, led by Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, to resolve outstanding issues in accordance with the Constitution and to secure a better future for both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

During the ceremony, Brigadier Taha Mohammed Amin, Dean of the Qalachwalan Military College, also delivered a speech in which he highlighted the institution's history and role in training future military leaders.

"This college was established in 1992 by President Mam Jalal and has become one of the achievements of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the people of Kurdistan. It has consistently served as a fortress of discipline and knowledge, as well as a centre for fostering national values and military professionalism, and has trained 14,630 officers," he said.

He added that the graduation marked the successful completion of another class of cadets who would now begin their national duties.

The graduates of the fifth officer training class at Qalachwalan Military College began their training on 29 April 2025. Throughout the programme, they received instruction in modern military tactics, defence strategies, and the principles of military discipline.
