Mazloum Abdi in Kobani to Assess Situation as Government Forces Withdraw

Syria's Presidential Advisor Mazloum Abdi has arrived in Kobani to assess the situation in the city following unrest and deadly prison fire, while the Syrian government's security forces withdrew from the city.

Abdi met with Chia Kobani, deputy commander of the Syrian army’s 60th Division, to discuss developments in the city and ways to ease tensions.

Meanwhile, Syrian government general security forces have withdrawn from Kobani and are working to restore normal conditions in the city.

The Martyrs’ Families Institute in Kobani issued a statement regarding the incidents, calling for an independent and transparent investigation into those responsible. The institute also declared two days of public mourning in the city.

Regarding reports of a curfew, sources in Kobani said the rumours were false. Residents continue to move freely through the streets, and no security decision has been issued to restrict movement in the city.

A fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday at a prison in Kobani, reportedly killing several inmates and leaving dozens suffering from smoke inhalation. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the fire broke out following a mutiny inside the prison, leaving 8 dead and around 20 injured.

The incident followed security tensions and unrest in Kobani on Friday following the reported killing of a young Kurdish man, identified as Sipan Karmi, who was reportedly decapitated by men affiliated with an Arab tribe in the area.
