PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani.
Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), condemned the recent attack on Saudi Arabia, warning that the incident could further threaten Iraq’s security and regional stability, while calling for an immediate investigation and maximum restraint to prevent further escalation.
President Bafel said in a statement regarding the attack on Saudi Arabia from Iraqi soil:
The recent attack targeting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia marks a dangerous escalation that threatens the security and stability of both Iraq and the broader region. We unequivocally condemn this attack and any act of violence that imperils civilian lives, violates national sovereignty, and destabilises regional relations.
At this critical juncture, restraint is paramount. While initial accusations and denials highlight the volatile nature of the situation, allowing tension to dictate action risks dragging the region into a deeper, unpredictable conflict. We urgently appeal to all parties to exercise maximum calm and avoid any retaliatory measures or rhetoric that could further exacerbate the situation.
Now is the moment for diplomatic discipline. An investigation must take place regarding these attacks and De-escalation must take precedence to allow the necessary space for constructive, undisturbed dialogue between the federal authorities and local stakeholders. True security cannot be achieved through force, but through transparent engagement and a shared commitment to national and regional sovereignty.
The PUK remains fully prepared to facilitate, support, and assist in any peaceful efforts or negotiations aimed at restoring stability, protecting civilian interests, and securing long-term peace across Iraq and the wider region.
Bafel Jalal Talabani
