PUK Official Meets Chaldean Patriarch in Baghdad, Reaffirms Support for Christian Community

As part of efforts to strengthen communication with Iraq’s diverse national components, Dr Khalid Shwani, head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Political Bureau's office in Baghdad, visited His Beatitude Patriarch Mar Paul III Nona, Patriarch of the Chaldean Church in Iraq and the world.

Shwani was accompanied by a senior delegation from the PUK Political Bureau.

During the meeting, Shwani conveyed the greetings of PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani, stressing his direct interest in the Christian community and his commitment to addressing its concerns and affairs.

He also reaffirmed the full support of the PUK parliamentary bloc and the Ministry of Justice for safeguarding the rights of the Christian community and strengthening its active participation in Iraqi public life. He noted that efforts are continuing to address the challenges facing Christians in the country.

Patriarch Nona welcomed the visiting delegation and expressed his appreciation for the PUK’s initiative and its longstanding interest in all components of the Iraqi people.

He recalled the historic role of the late President Mam Jalal in supporting Christians, particularly in the Nineveh Plains and Kirkuk. The Patriarch also praised Talabani’s prominent role and contributions to supporting and constructing churches in Sulaymaniyah.
