Saudi Arabia has reopened its main airport to international flights more than two weeks after deadly Houthi strikes from Yemen forced the facility to suspend operations. The kingdom said on Sunday that its air defences had intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile and a drone launched towards the capital.

King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh announced that Terminals 1 and 2 had reopened for domestic and international flights from Sunday.

The reopening comes as Yemen’s Houthi rebels continue to launch drones and missiles towards the Saudi capital.

Saudi military spokesman Major General Turki al-Malki said air defences intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile and a drone targeting Riyadh early on Sunday. He also reported that 10 ballistic missiles heading towards the kingdom’s southern region had been intercepted.

In early October, Houthi strikes hit a complex housing two other airport terminals, killing 17 people and injuring more than 330.

Last week, Riyadh airport resumed limited domestic flights as authorities gradually restored operations.
