A member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) parliamentary bloc has submitted a formal request to the Iraqi Parliament’s Presidency, calling for a review of a secondary school textbook that makes no mention of the Anfal campaign or the chemical weapons attacks suffered by the people of Kurdistan.

MP Brako Sherko Fatih Shwani told PUKMEDIA that a request was submitted during Wednesday’s parliamentary session, stressing the need to ensure that crimes committed by the former Ba’ath regime against the various components of Iraqi society are properly documented.

He said the request called for a review of Crimes of the Defunct Ba’ath Party, a textbook published in 2025 for fourth-year secondary school students, to ensure that atrocities committed against the Kurdish people receive appropriate coverage.

“These include the Anfal operations, which claimed the lives of thousands of citizens and led to the destruction of thousands of villages, as well as the chemical weapons attack on the city of Halabja,” Shwani said.

He added that the Iraqi Parliament had been asked to direct the relevant authorities, particularly the Ministry of Education, to revise the textbook and document these crimes accurately and fairly.

According to Shwani, the proposed revision would help deliver justice for the victims, strengthen historical awareness among students and promote the values of coexistence and justice among all components of Iraqi society.
