Joe Kent, the former Director of the United States National Counterterrorism Center, has highlighted the crucial role of Kurdish leadership in maintaining regional stability and supporting future diplomatic efforts.
Speaking exclusively to Channel8 in his first appearance on Middle Eastern media, Kent underlined that what the Talabani brothers have done is going to be very, very key going forward.
Addressing the possibility of Kurdish fighters being drawn into the conflict, Kent aligned himself with the position taken by Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
“Bafel Talabani summed it up very, very well, that the stability that has always been found in the Iraqi Kurdish regions should remain. It should remain as a very stable region, a place where people can go and meet and actually engage in diplomacy.”
Kent also pointed to the Kurdistan Region’s potential role as a venue for dialogue, stating:
“Sometime in the future, we can sit down with the Iranians in Erbil or Sulaymaniyah, and work this thing out without firing rockets at each other.”
He emphasised that deploying Kurdish fighters into Iran would not be a viable strategy:
“There are not enough Kurdish fighters. Even if they wanted to, inside of Iran, to meaningfully take out any part of the Iranian regime. Introducing that instability would actually work against everyone's strategic goals.”
