The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has issued a statement marking the anniversary of the bombing of Qaladze with internationally prohibited weapons.

The Politburo’s statement reads:

The anniversaries of the 1974 bombing of Qaladze and the city’s popular uprising in 1982 stand as powerful reminders of the sacrifices made by our people and their resistance in the face of the crimes of the occupying Ba’ath regime. They also symbolise the enduring aspiration for freedom and the determination to confront injustice.

During the 1980s, under the leadership of PUK organisations, the University of Sulaymaniyah in Qaladze made profound sacrifices, offering martyrs in the struggle. The blood of its students was shed alongside that of the city’s martyrs, together forging a lasting legacy of resistance and sacrifice for the student and popular uprisings in Pshdar and across Kurdistan.

The bombing, destruction of Qaladze, and the forced displacement of its residents constituted yet another act of genocide against the city and our people. As such, it is imperative that there is both material and moral compensation, alongside renewed efforts for development and reconstruction in Qaladze. A tribute to the steadfast city, martyred twice.

We honour, with deep respect, the souls of its noble martyrs.
