The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has issued a statement marking the 51st anniversary of the party’s founding and the 50th anniversary of igniting the Kurdish people’s new revolution. The statement affirmed that the PUK will remain the PUK of President Mam Jalal and the defender of the rights of the Kurdish people, and that it is currently leading the process of correcting the course of governance under the leadership of President Bafel Jalal Talabani.
The following is the text of the Political Bureau’s statement:
People of Kurdistan,
Families of our glorious martyrs,
Comrades of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan,
Today marks 51 years since the beginning of your PUK’s struggle, the PUK, and 50 years since igniting our people’s new revolution.
On this occasion, we extend our warmest congratulations to the people of Kurdistan, for whom this struggle was launched in pursuit of dignity.
The long and arduous struggle of the PUK and our people’s new revolution, after 16 years of continuous effort, culminated in the liberation of a large part of the Kurdish people and land. This achievement, the Spring Uprising of 1991, was meticulously and consciously planned by your PUK, paving the way for a democratic and self-governing system. Despite internal difficulties and disagreements, this system has become a distinguished model and was eventually enshrined in the Iraqi Constitution following the fall of the former dictatorial regime.
The fruits of this struggle have reached the stage of liberating a significant part of the Kurdish people and territory. The achievements of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and its hopeful revolution, led by President Mam Jalal and his esteemed comrades among the founding leadership, the Peshmerga, and the commanders of the early detachments, have become a source of great national pride and a model of democracy in Kurdistan and across Iraq. It is also a matter of immense pride that present-day Iraq is the product of the profound ideology of the PUK’s renewal revolution, which advanced the Kurdish cause to a qualitative victory and led Iraq towards a federal and constitutional framework, culminating in the legal roadmap embodied in Article 140 of the Constitution regarding Kirkuk and the disputed territories. On this basis, the PUK’s efforts to strengthen coexistence and ensure the preservation of Kirkuk’s Kurdish identity will continue without interruption.
Today, as we mark this historic occasion, we renew our pledge that we will remain the PUK serving the masses and the true defender of their demands and rights until the goal of self-determination is achieved. We reaffirm that we are the PUK of President Mam Jalal, now led by President Bafel, continuing the process of correcting the course of governance and fulfilling all constitutional and national obligations to ensure genuine partnership. This is a phase of renewal in which the positions, statements, and decisions of the PUK are taken seriously, as they are implemented in practice. In this phase, our institutional struggle is being renewed and strengthened on the basis of loyalty to our long-standing struggle, in order to meet the demands of Kurdish nationalism and future democracy.
As our people and party institutions commemorate the anniversary of the PUK’s founding with dedication, the Party of Martyrs draws strength and inspiration from the pure souls of the martyrs of freedom, our experience, and the national aspirations of our people. Through balanced governance and Kurdish justice, we aim to activate state institutions and parliament, and to safeguard our experience—the fruit of the martyrs’ blood and decades of struggle—from threats and intimidation by our enemies.
Victory to the legitimate struggle of the PUK for peace, democracy, human rights, and the right to self-determination. A tribute to the pure souls of the martyrs of our people, the PUK, and the new revolution.
